Orientation

Finding places in Jakarta, especially smaller buildings not on the main arteries, tends to be difficult due to poor signage and chaotic street names. Sometimes, the same name is used for different streets in different parts of the city, and it's often difficult to find the correct street/address without the postal code/region. A sign with a street name facing you indicates the name of the street you are about to enter, not that of the cross street.

Alleys off a main road are often simply numbered, in a sequence that may not be logical, so a street address like "Jl. Mangga Besar VIII/21" means house number 21 on alley number 8 (VIII) off or near the main road of Jl. Mangga Besar.

If you don't want to waste time, ask for the descriptions/name of nearby buildings, billboards, colour of the building/fence and the postal code of the address. If you still cannot find the address, start asking people in the street, especially ojek (motorcyle taxi drivers).

How to Get in Jakarta (by Plane) ?

Soekarno Hatta International Airport (IATA: CGK; ICAO: WIII), [2] at Tangerang, Banten. All international and nearly all domestic flights land here 20 km (12 mi) to the northwest of the city. The unintuitive airport code comes from Cengkareng, a district near the airport. During the rainy season the road to and from Cengkareng was prone to flooding but this problem has now been alleviated with the building of a raised, dual carriageway, toll road between the city and Cengkareng. If you don't have non-stop options between your origin city and Jakarta, try connecting via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur as there are more than a dozen flights a day between these cities and Jakarta.
The Soekarno Hatta airport has three terminals, further split up into sub-terminals, which are really just halls in the same building:
  • Terminal 1 (A-B-C). Used by domestic airlines except Air Asia, Mandala, Garuda.
  • Terminal 2. All international airlines (D-E) and domestic Garuda flights (F).
  • Terminal 3 (Low Cost Carrier Terminal). The newest and nicest of the bunch, Pier 1 serves Air Asia domestic flights and all Mandala flights.
A free but unreliable shuttle bus runs between the terminals; if you're in a hurry, it's a safer bet to take a taxi, although they may ask for a rather steep Rp 50,000 for the service (not entirely unjustified, as half of this goes to paying their parking fees), however it should really be a metered ride. If you have time, though, it's not a problem to wait for next one - just ask the airport staff where it stops and what it looks like (yellow color, normally). Also, be sure to know which terminal you will disembark from.
Visas on arrival (VOA) are available at the airport, see the main Indonesia article for the details of the rules. If possible, provide an exact payment of US$25 and ignore any requests for bribes or any additional fees. ATMs and currency exchange services are available in the baggage claim hall, and Terminal D has a left luggage service. The Visa on Arrival is payable in cash only and the nearest ATM is past the customs area, so if you don't have cash, you will need to be escorted to the ATM and back.
Be cautious of having any involvement or contact with the baggage porters, the greater majority of them are committed scamsters and they often attempt to obtain money by cheating and misleading passengers. They should be paid Rp 5,000 to carry bags but that is best avoided, seek out a trolley and deal with it yourself.
Exchange rates in the airport are not significantly worse than the centre of town and better than you will get from hotels. Bear in mind that you will need some cash and Jakarta is not a place where you can just stroll down to the nearest bank in town as it is pedestrian unfriendly. ATMs generally have limit of Rp 1-3 million per transaction; for the latter, try CIMB or bii-Maybank - in the international terminal, there are several of these on the second (departure) floor.
If you are taking a domestic flight from Soekarno Hatta, you can enjoy cheap airport lounges. There are several private lounges open to travellers on any airline that are in stiff competition with each other. For Rp 50,000, you can get a few hours in one of these lounges where you can relax on the comfy couches, eat and drink as much as you want and use the internet (either by wifi or through their computers).
To get to the city, the easiest option is to contact your hotel to pick you up in the airport, as many hotels in Jakarta provide free airport transfers. Getting a taxi is a little more complicated:
  • If you book from the counters right outside Customs, you'll get a nice car, jump to the head of the queue and pay around Rp 175,000 for a trip to the Golden Triangle. These counters can also sell you SIM cards and refills.
  • If you head past the counters, you'll get to the ordinary taxi ranks — and encounter many touts and baggage carriers, these individuals should be ignored and will probably need waving off (just wave your hand and shake your head). Silver Bird is a very reliable operator with good drivers and plush Mercedes cabs, but pricier than the rest at around Rp 120,000 to the Golden Triangle. Blue Bird has smaller but still nice air-conditioned Toyota Vios cars, and would cost you around Rp 90,000. Other operators will charge you in the vicinity of Rp 70,000-90,000. All taxis use meters (argo), passengers are responsible for paying roadway tolls, prices are posted at the toll booths and a receipt is given. The airport has a docket system for payment of an airport surcharge in addition to the normal taxi metered charge. It is detailed on the docket and is determined by destination distance. You are asked for your destination when arriving at the taxi rank and the docket is issued accordingly when you are assigned a taxi. If you do not make it clear that you require a taxi you may not be assigned one. The Bluebird taxi staff are uniformed. If someone offers you a taxi and they are not wearing that uniform you are well advised to ignore them.
Xtrans, ☎+62 21 5296-2255, +62 21 5296-4477. Provides reliable airport shuttle service from Soekarno Hatta airport to major hotels in Sudirman and Thamrin Street in Jakarta and Bumi Xtrans in Cihampelas Street in Bandung. Cost: US$3.30/adult and US$2.20/child. Schedule: once every hour from 5AM-10PM. Xtrans booth are available at Terminal IA, IB, IC and IIE.
  • Jakarta Airport Transfer, Jl Jembatan Tiga Raya 5AH, Jakarta Utara, +62 21 9062 2754 (Jakarta) (). Door to door transportion to Jakarta city and neighbouring cities. Whole day car hire is available in Jakarta and Bandung with driver if required. Airport transfers provide options of stopovers at Puncak, Bogor, Cirebon with a choice of economy (7 seater) or jumbo vehicle (15 seater). Online reservation and instant confirmation. A daily Bandung Express is a more private though more expensive option for travellers to Bandung with pricing from Rp 300,000/passenger.  edit
If you have more time than money, frequent (15 min to 1 hr between buses, depending on route and time) DAMRI shuttle buses connect to Jakartan destinations Rawamangun, Pasar Minggu, Blok M and Gambir (Rp 20,000) as well as directly to the neighboring cities of Bekasi, BogorDepok (Rp 30,000). The bus service operates until midnight and is comfortable. You can get the tickets in the many counters after the airport exit. If arriving by an international flight, head to the left after going out of the building until you see DAMRI ticket booths and bus stops. and
For overnight transits, there are a few hotels near the airport:
  • 'Sheraton Bandara Hotel, Bandara Soekarno-Hatta (3 km from airport). ☎ +62 21 559 7777, [3]. 5-star hotel with 205 Deluxe rooms and 15 Suite rooms. Rooms have Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds and 32" LCD TVs. Complimentary shuttle airport pick-up and drop off and a private lounge at the airport. Check the special offers on the hotel's website to find special packages such as day use, special rewards and offer on related deals. From US$100.
The older Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (IATA: HLP, ICAO: WIHH), to the southeast of the city, is used by military, VIP flights, charter flights, helicopter leasing companies and private jets.
  • Susi Air, ☎ +62 811 211 3080, [4] provides services to local destinations across Western Java from Halim Airport.

Little Italy San Diego

Little Italy in San Diego is rapidly evolving as an inner city neighborhood that's perfect to live in, shop, dine, or visit.  The Little Italy offers great views of the bay, art and cultural festivities, and great food.
The nearby street sign for Little Italy, created in 1999, signals that the area is the heart and soul of San Diego's inner community.  The sign is truly a signal of peace, and can be found on India Street between Date and Fir.

Each and every year, there are nearly a dozen festivals held in Little Italy. There are tons of holiday celebrations, music, and art expo's.  During this time, Little Italy comes alive like never before.

The heart of Little Italy is India Street.  This street has plenty of outdoor cafes, restaurants, galleries, and specialty shops.  Nearby Amici Park offers a playground for the Washington Elementary School and a community park that's complete with a bocce ball court.

Bigger than the Little Italy neighborhoods in New York and San Francisco, San Diego's Little Italy keeps getting bigger and better.  The waterfront district of San Diego is bouncing back with Little
Italy, proving to be a great place for tourist attraction.

Downtown San Diego Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego contains some of the most extensive and dramatically designed historic buildings in the area.  Constructed between 1873 and 1930, these Victorian style buildings are truly a sight to behold.
The Victorian era buildings found in the Gaslamp Quarter are home to night clubs, restaurants, theaters, and shops.  A simple stroll down 4th and 5th avenue will put you at the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter.

Also found in the Gaslamp Quarter is the Horton Plaza and Horton Plaza Park.  The Plaza is the first place in the United States to feature a water fountain containing electric lights; a true tribute to the designer Alonzo Horton.

The Gaslamp Quarter received its name from the gaslamps that were used in the area around the early 1900's.  During those times, gaslamps were the main source of light for the area that is now the vision of Modern Day San Diego.

Now days, there are more than 130 stores and shops filling the Gaslamp Quarter.  With everything from Macy's to Mervyns, Gaslamp Quarter has plenty for you to see and do.  In Horton Plaza, you can find a multi screen movie theater that is sure to please movie lovers.

For a wonderful experience, the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego shouldn't be overlooked.  There is a lot you can do here, from fine dining to excellent shops.  For a family vacation, San Diego has a little bit of something for everyone.

Miyabi Ganti Nama

15th Floors Hotel in 6 Days

China was incredible. Not only economic power that is able to make the United States and Japan worried, but also productivity and efficiency of its workers were awesome.
Imagine, a construction company in the city of Changsha, China successfully completed the construction of the 15 floors hotel in just 6 days. It's  name Ark Hotel.
Funny to imagine how the citizens of Changsha who was traveling a week for instance, suddenly came home and found the building 15 floors up.
Although built in a short time, the hotel is not a mock construction. Equipped with soundproof, and earthquake resistant structures that claimed up to force 9 on the Richter scale.
What is the secret that high hotel could be built in an instant? Apparently, a construction company that takes a direct manufacturer materials can be assembled - in the form of concrete columns.
And incredibly, despite working in conditions of a hurry, no single worker is injured. And because the materials have been prepared and printed in such a way, there's no pile of the remnants of building materials are scattered on the construction site.
Intrigued with how the hotel was built in record time.

What Is This?

Ketika mendengar celotehan tukul di acara Bukan Empat Mata, saya tertawa geli. Si tukul ngomongnya keInggris-Inggrisan. Walaupun ucapannya salah, dia tetap PD aja.

”Oh My God… My English so bad..!”. Semakin saya menyadari, semakin saya bersemangat untuk terus belajar.

Kunci dari semua itu adalah Keep Trying, enriched your vocabulary everyday, know how to use in sentences.

So.. have you already speaking English well..? If not, you can start from now! There is never late to learn. More Soon More Better..! (gun)

Bisnis Online

Raih dollar dari Internet. Sukses Berbisnis Online. $$$ dari PTC, Google Adsense. Itulah judul buku-buku tentang cara mendapatkan penghasilan online melaui internet. But, anyway I don’t care about that.

1. Paid To Click (PTC)
2. Pay Per Review
3. Pay Per Play (PPP)
4. Pay Per Click (PPC)
5. Pay Per Impresion (PPI)
6. Social Networking
7. Google Adsense
8. Toko Online
9. Reseller
10. dll

(gun)

Sum kaget karena memang tanpa persiapan mateng, sampai urusan pasang tarif belum pernah dibicarakan, akhirnya menoleh ke pohon tempat Parto mengawasinya dari jauh. "Bentar Mas," katanya pada sopir angkot.

Ia menghampiri Parto, minta nasihat.

Can You imagine, You will arround the world by luxurious cruise ship without spend your money even you'll getsallary in DOLAR US yang nilainya bila Anda bekerja di Indonesia, mungkin sama dengan gaji seorang Manager. Fantastic Bukan..? Ya. VeryFantastic.

In fact, working onboard like Holland America Line, Carnival are not easy thing, tapi bukan berarti susah-susah amat. Modalnya tidaklah besar, Anda cukup menyediakan uang mulai US$300 till US$2000. Tapinya lagi, uang bukanlah modal utama, kemampuan bahasa Inggris Andalah yang utama.

Bila Anda lancar cas cis cus dalam bahasa Inggris, saya pastikan 60% Anda diterima bekerja di kapal pesiar. Koq cuma 60%?

Nikmati… Enjoy aja..!! Good Luck!

Recruitment process on HAL part 3

Finally, the tests have come to an end and I was given a reference paper to be given to SBI next day. Early in the morning, I reached SBI office and give them the reference paper. I was given another paper for reference to the hospital in Rawamangun. I forgot the name of the Hospital, but I still remember it’s located at Rawamangun.

I went to the hospital and do the test, but on our own expenses, there were some people from HAL as well waiting there. There were 2 tests, first was blood test, and second was chest roentgen.Finished with those medical checks up, I was ordered to submit the results right away on that day also. After that, the lady asked me to go to Mr. Halizah (sorry if wrong spelled) to ask about what to do next. He is known to be my supervisor after that. He told me to bring sums of photos, and cash for administration and visa deposit. Total of the cash was about over Rp.1,000,000+. But there was Rp.900,000 which was for visa deposit will be returned when I finished my training.

He gave me date line for me to settle the admin fees and deposit as well as preparing the photos. Besides that, I was told to bring the Photostats of my latest certificate, valid and expired passport if there is any, as well as seaman book if there is any. I settled the photos as fast I could and settle the payment of the fees as well and then I was prompted to sign a contract. He told me how much do I get paid, and tipping and how the salary will be given, how long I will have my training, when it is going to be held and when I will start working, how is my work going to be and so on. After that, I was prompted to go to the visa counter where I was asked to fill in my contacts and pay all the sum of money as well as submit the documents.
Finished with all those, what I have to do next was waiting to be called for a visa interview at the US embassy.

I was going back to my hometown as it’s almost Idul Fitri, so they won’t be calling in short time. Two weeks after I submitted all necessaries, I was called and asked to go back to Jakarta and go to SBI office to get the reference paper from SBI to US embassy. With that yellow card, I go to US embassy the next morning. As he warned me that it will be crowded, I go there about 6.00 am, and it’s true, there are hundreds of people queuing up near the entrance of the embassy even though it will only open at 7.00am. One hour waiting there seems to be most tired from all those efforts to work on board. But there are few local people who rent chairs to those who are tired. Well, Indonesian always knows how to make money, isn’t it? Around 6.55am, there was a lady officer shouting to the queue line "Sailors go to left! Make 2 lines!" I was as fast as I can to reach the front line and there are almost 100 of sailors on that day (it’s Monday). Then, with full security we are all being check before entering the US embassy. Well, luckily sailors have the privileges to enter first before other publics that queuing up before us. As I remembered from the entrance to the visa interview, we have to gone through 3 checks before we can actually enter the building. From human check to metal detector, and even our hand phones, walkmans, discman, or other electronic stuffs must be left at the entering counter.

The first step when interview would be finger print detection. After all finished with finger print which almost same when we do our driving license in the police station, we will be called again to be interviewed. They will ask how many times we work as sailor, how long, which cruise, etc…
Well, I get back to my aunt’s house but off course without leaving my hand phones, and feel good as I’ve finished all those procedures. I only need to gone through the training, and I will be onboard to work as RSA. Well, I don’t know what exactly waiting for me at the training mess, or on the board itself. I was called yesterday from SBI to remind me the training date, and when should reach the training place in Cikarang. I was told to reach there a night before training begin, which is 7pm.

And I was told that there is no washing machine or iron there, I was told as well to bring my suit which is white long sleeve shirt, black pants, black shoe, dark coloured shock, bow tie, and personal belongings. Other than that, I was told that the training session will be 5 weeks English class and 5 weeks professional class. If I can’t pass the first 5 weeks, I will have to repeat until I pass. That’s mean; almost all of the tests were about English skill, written or oral.

Things move great so far, hope so in the next 10 weeks of my training.
Hope this can help you to gain confidence before you actually apply and gone through the process, but this procedure can be changed anytime the SBI or HAL wanted it to be. So, don’t expect it’s all the same as my experience.

Last tips from me, English as I said is the most important, if our English is good enough, well, you can believe on your self and gain your self confidence through your English skill, I am not talking about can say "yes" or "no" but more to intermediate skill.

Good luck but don’t try your luck!

Recruitment process for HAL (Part 2)

Author: Edy Tantra

This part, I will explain the next step of interview, as I was asked to go to Cikarang for further test.

It was too early as I reached MS Nieuw (The building name), so I waited in the car and just look around the building where I will spend my 10 weeks training if I completed my tests and get a result of pass of course. The building was divided by 2 parts which is a dormitory on the left, and classrooms, offices, and trainee canteen on the right. It was 8 A.M as I entered the gate and asked the security where the training room is. They took my ID card and give me a visitor card. I walked in the pathway, and entered a big hall, it was the training place. I saw a lot of trainees there. Some of them were using black and white with bow tie, some of them not using bow ties. At last I found out that housekeeping trainees are not using bow tie, the one using bow tie are those trainees from Dining room or RSA (Room Service Attendant).

Walking through the hall, I saw a lot of class rooms with a sign on the door. There was a room named “Marcopolo”. Some of the classes was designed to fit with actual working condition, for example a class with bath room and bed room for housekeeping. Some were designed to be look like a dining room to support the training session for dining room trainee and RSA trainee. All the rooms were equipped with nice lighting, good environment, and air conditioning as well as of course, desks and chairs. Most of trainee have short haircut, and I guess it’s a must to have neat and short hair.

The formal test began as a person coming and entered the room. He welcame us and asked us to follow him to the room which at last I found out that it was the HR office. He explained what kind of tests we will face that day, and he gave us forms to fill in. It’s actually a form which will be filled with our scored marks through out the tests and interview, and 2 pages of format for CV/resume.

The first test was only a conversation skill in English. This time the interviewer was a lady. She asked few questions about myself, for example where I am living, how old I am, what my parents do for living, how many brothers/sisters I have, how do I found out about HAL, why do I want to work in HAL, what do I know about HAL, etc. There were still a lot of questions she asked me, but one thing for sure to tell readers, don’t wait until she asked you, try to expand your own story by yourself. When she asked about your family, tell her all, not only your parents or how many sisters/ brothers you have, but try to tell them more, such as where are your sisters/ brothers, how old are them, what do they do, and you are the oldest, youngest, or the 2nd, 3rd, etc. That’s one of my tips for you readers.

Having finished from the first tests, the lady asked me, why did I choose to work as Housekeeping as my English is just too good to be Housekeeper. She suggested me to be a RSA, and I told her directly that I actually applied to be RSA but SBI put me under HK as perhaps they do not want to take a risk if let’s say my English was terrible. After that she asked me to follow her to HR office and requested to upgrade my position to be RSA, the HR officer agreed with condition if I pass the RSA test.

The next test was the professional skill test. There was a list of question with a check mark for correct answers. I should have the minimum score to pass this test. The questions that I still remembered were:
- What are the methods of cooking of eggs? (Poached, boiled, scrambled, etc…)
- If a guest order a steak, what do we ask? (How do you like it to be done, sir?)
- What are the criteria of a steak? (Very well done, well done, etc…)
- Name the type of cereals.? (Cornflakes, coco puff, etc…)
- Name the type of breakfast? (American, Continental)
- What is American breakfast, example?
- What is Continental breakfast, example?
- Name the type of soups, example?

After that he gave me pictures and asked me to name it, few are poached egg, boiled egg, scrambled egg, etc. I have to differentiate between tenderloin and sirloin from the pictures as well.
Well, I passed the test even though it’s not a good result as I have no full time experience as I am a fresh graduate in Hotel management, not operation.

The next step was the last test for that day, it was a computerized English test. This test can be very difficult to those who are not good in written or grammar. Before I started my test, I have to pay a sum of money about Rp.45.000 if I am not mistaken for the software copyright. There were about 90’s questions that needed to answer in 1 hour. The question consists of listening (using headphone), which is odd, complete the sentence, option question, true or false question. As for readers information, the question is a bit hard if you are only a passive English speaker. One of the example of which is odd that I remembered and troubled me much was:
Which is odd?
A.Uncle
B.Son
C.Nephew
D.Niece

You might choose son is it? Well, it was wrong, the answer was Niece, because they were all male except niece. Hope this example won’t scare you much as now you already knew the right answer. It was D. Well, you should have a minimum score to pass the test, and it depends on your position. As RSA, the minimum score is higher than HK.
